A popular supplement

AA Pharmachem MCT oil powder

MCT Oil (Medium-chain triglycerides or in short MCT) usage and consumption has grown rapidly over the last few years. This is may be due to growing awareness of the benefits of coconut oil, a rich source of Medium-chain triglycerides. It is also claimed that Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) can aid in weight loss. Athletes and bodybuilders have also started using MCT oil in supplements

MCT is short for medium-chain triglycerides. These are fats found in foods like coconut oil. These fats are metabolized by the body in a different way. MCT oil is a supplement that contains a lot of these fats and is claimed to have a lot of health benefits.

The technical term of fat is Triglyceride which is carried into cells of the human body and used for energy or is stored as body fat. A Triglyceride is a glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acids. There are long chain ( 13 to 21 carbon atoms) and short chain ( less than 6 carbon atoms) fatty acids. Medium-chain fatty acids in MCTs have 6 to 12 carbon atoms.

These are the main medium-chain fatty acids:
• C6: Caproic acid or hexanoic acid.
• C8: Caprylic acid or octanoic acid.
• C10: Capric acid or decanoic acid.
• C12: Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid.

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s) are broken down quickly and absorbed by the body. The MCT’s are usually stored in the liver. It is an instant energy source and is turned into Ketones. MCT’s are less likely to be stored as fats as they are more efficiently converted to energy and used by the body.
