Description
Glucosamine Sulphate is a dietary supplement marketed to support structure and function of joints. Glucosamine sulfate supplements have exhibited real promise in treating joint problems and inflammation not only for humans, but also for dogs, horses and other companion animals. The same factors that make Glucosamine sulfate so effective at treating humans can have the same impact on animals. As such, it is a commonly recommended supplement.
Glucosamine regulates the synthesis of collagen in cartilage and may provide mild anti-inflammatory effects. Some researchers think the “sulfate” part of glucosamine sulfate is important as Sulfate is needed by the body to produce cartilage. Glucosamine is naturally present in the shells of shellfish, animal bones, bone marrow, and fungi.
Most glucosamine is manufactured by processing chitin from the shells of shellfish including shrimp, lobsters, and crabs. Glucosamine is also manufactured using fungus Aspergillus niger and from fermenting corn to meet the needs of vegetarians and others with objections to shellfish.
There are different forms of glucosamine including glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, and N-acetyl-glucosamine. These different chemicals have some similarities; however, they may not have the same effects when taken as a dietary supplement. Most of the scientific research done on glucosamine has been done on glucosamine sulfate.
